Gold

Diamond rings are usually made with 14K (585) and 18K (750) gold. In Europe, they're mostly 18K and in the USA, 14K, but sometimes there is a choice. You may wonder which karat age (fineness) is better.

Because of the higher gold content, 18K rings are worth more. They usually have a brighter yellow color than 14K gold, but over a period of years, the gold can wear away because of its softness. However, if the band is not unusually thin, there is no need to worry about this.

Rings of 14K gold are less expensive, usually wear better, and hold the diamonds more securely than those made of 18K, but 14K might have a tendency to discolor or tarnish due to the lower percentage of gold and a high percentage of copper. Occasionally, the metals alloyed with 14K gold cause an allergic reaction in some people.

Whether a ring is 14K or 18K is usually not an important issue. What matters more is whether you can find a ring you like in your price range. But if you have a ring custom made, you can easily choose the percentage of the gold. Consider the above points. Then have
a look at some 14K and 18K rings to see if you can tell a difference. If you can, choose the gold that looks best to you.
