Real Gold or Fake?
Often,
buyers assume that a ring is real gold if the gold karat age
or fineness is marked on it. Since there are countries that
have no laws regulating these markings, this is a false assumption.
In
Thailand, it's possible to find rings stamped 30K (meaning
125% gold). Even in regulated countries, officials do not
have time to always verify gold content. Consequently, it's
important to deal with reputable jewelers. If you prefer to
buy your jewelry at flea markets or from vendors, it's advisable
to learn gold detection techniques.
Three ways you can check gold are with
* Visual tests - based on color and gold purity markings.
* Acid tests - based on reactions to nitric and hydrochloric
acid.
+ Price tests - based on the current market price of gold.
Of these three ways of checking gold, the acid tests are the
most reliable, but since it's dangerous and inconvenient to
carry nitric and hydrochloric acid, it's helpful to know how
to recognize fake gold just by looking at it. Looks, however,
can be deceiving.
