How
to Care for and Protect Your Diamond Ring

Have descriptive characteristics of your diamonds and ring
written on both your copy and the store's copy of the take-in
receipt. If you leave a diamond bracelet or necklace with
someone, also have the length of the piece and the number
of stones or links written on the receipt. It is normal for
stores and appraisers to write colorless stone or yellow metal
in place of diamond and gold if they don't have time to test
the stone and the metal.

It
is normal too for them to refuse to indicate the color and
clarity grade of a diamond on the take-in receipt, especially
if it is mounted. Exact grades cannot be accurately assigned
to mounted diamonds. Stores should, however, be willing to
write down characteristics that are visible and measurable,
if you ask them. Not only can written receipts serve as documentary
evidence of switching, they can also help prevent it from
occurring.
If
you have a diagram or photograph of your diamonds or ring,
photocopy it and ask the store to acknowledge that it is a
fair representation. The jewelry piece itself can also h;
photocopied.
Beware of jewelers who do repairs for unbelievably low prices.
Perhaps a lack of experience or honesty may be the reason
for such low prices.
Try to establish a relationship with a jeweler you feel is
trustworthy. This is probably the best preventative of all.
